CHAPTER NINETEEN
The next few months flew by in no time. I somehow managed to pass my midterms while balancing my secret, supernatural training and my loads of homework. Progress had been slow, but overall, I was getting better at re-energizing myself from my surroundings.
Claire and Dr. Al had been true to their word and joined us during our nighttime practices. At first theyâd sat and watched as Gabe instructed us on our exercise regimes. But eventually, Claire and Dr. Al had added in their own method of practicing to our training.
Combat training. With silver daggers.
My heart pounded when Iâd first held the sparkling silver in my hand. But despite my terror of killing anything, Dr. Al and Claire were right: if we were planning on going up against Dark Souls and the king, weâd best know how to wield a dagger and defend ourselves.
Occasionally, Gabe and Claire would combat train against each other. It was amazing to see how quickly Gabe could attack her and how stealthily she could dodge his blows and escape from his traps. I could tell Jack wanted to jump in, eager to face Gabe. But truth be told, neither of us was confident enough in our swordsmanship to even dream about dueling Gabe.
Iâd watched Jack closely over these past few months. I kept an eye out for any sign of the Darkness invading his soul and overcoming him. Luckily, I never saw any external sign of the Darkness taking over. But part of me couldnât shake the thought that some evil might have crept up within him.
At first, Jack didnât show any new powers. He could still see the future and feel my emotions. But as time began to pass, I noticed his strength and speed began to develop at an unbelievably fast rate. One night, we discovered he could cut his mile time by half and do pushups and pull-ups without even breaking a sweat.
Gabe seemed to take notice of Jackâs new stamina, too. One night a few weeks earlier, heâd challenged Jack to a race. Jack excitedly agreed. I could tell he was eager to accept any challenge Gabe offered.
âWe are going to run up the hill to the top of Church Street, touch the church, and then head back down here,â Gabe explained.
âBring it on!â Jack agreed, placing his foot behind the starting line.
Part of me still didnât believe Jack could run at Gabeâs lightning-fast speeds, but there was only one way to find out.
Claire walked up to the starting line, an old, white cloth in her hands.
âThree,â she started counting down. âTwo.â She raised the makeshift flag above her head. âOne!â
Gabe and Jack took off. The force of their departure pushed the wind in my face, ruffling my hair. Through the strands of blond, I could see Jack actually could travel at lightning speeds.
âWow,â I whispered, shocked.
âI told you heâd be thanking me.â Claire smugly smiled and pushed past me.
A few seconds later, Gabe appeared before me, followed closely by Jack. He was breathing hard.
